    Moto Survey: GPS Saves Time, Fuel Costs


    Nearly 50 percent of businesses using GPS technologies cite a reduction in travel distance by an average of 231.2 miles per week, saving $51,582 in annual fuel savings. That is according to a Motorola, Inc., survey of those in the transportation, manufacturing, and trucking/warehousing industries.

    Giddy Up, Horsey! Track the Pony Express


    It was technology, namely that new-fangled wireless technology, the telegraph, that heralded an end to the short-lived Pony Express. Now GPS technology, a wireless technology not foreseen yet in the 1860s, is helping riders recreate the historic route on horseback, the Associated Press reports.

    U.S. DOT, California Developing Traffic Data Test Bed


    The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) have announced a $12.4 million partnership as part of DOT's SafeTrip-21 initiative.     RF identification (RFID) supplier Intelleflex Corp and IT automation specialist Minds Inc. have developed combination GPS and RFID tracking system specifically for crop harvesting.

    Vehicle Tracker to Keep Tabs on Yacht Race


    While tracking competitive racers on land is taking off, GPS technology is also getting put to use tracking racers on the water. Fleet management and vehicle tracking provider Pointer Telocation Ltd. and G4S Telematix S.A. will provide tracking technology for live coverage of a series of premier Mediterranean sailing races, the companies said today.

    Hexagon Acquires GPS Fleet Tracking Company


    Swedish measurement company Hexagon AB has acquired all outstanding shares in the Swedish startup software company Viewserve AB; Viewserve specializes in GPS- and web-based fleet management for the construction market.

    Southwest Airlines Preparing for RNP Implementation


    Southwest Airlines says it will invest $175 million over the next six years to implement Required Navigation Performance (RNP) procedures at all 64 airports it serves. It made the announcement at the Eco-Aviation Conference in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, June 19.
